PostHeaderIcon Famous Cat Lover: Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway was given a six-toed cat by a ship’s captain in Key West, Florida, where he made his home for a number of years.  He subsequently became a cat-lover because he admired the spirit and independence of cats.

When Hemingway died at the age of 61, he left a provision in his will that would insure that his cats would always be taken care of and have a home.

Today, approximately 60 cats, half of them polydactyl (having many toes), make their home in the Ernest Hemingway Museum and Home, in Key West, protected by the terms of his will. At least some of those cats are descendents of Hemingway’s first cat. Most of the cats are neutered and spayed, but some are allowed to have offspring so that the total number of cats stays at around sixty.

They have some rather unusual names such as: Audrey Hepburn, Pablo Picasso, Joan Crawford and Gertrude Stein.
