PostHeaderIcon Has Your Cat Ever Apologized To You?

Seriously! Do you ever feel like your cat (or dog, or other pet) knows they have done something unacceptable and cares enough about it to look or act apologetic?  Do animals have a conscience?

Taco has this habit of reaching up and hugging me when he wants attention or anything from me, he does it quite often when I’m in the kitchen working.  Since I clip his claws, it’s usually not a problem (but annoying). I haven’t had a chance to do his manicure lately so his claws have gotten awfully sharp.  Today when he did his hug/give me attention routine, it really HURT, and I yelled.  He is not used to me yelling! So he ran right out of the kitchen, but two seconds later came in slowly meowing very loudly and looking straight into my eyes.  I swear he was saying “I’m sorry, you’re not mad at me are you?”  Then he got VERY loveable.

I believe that he was showing submission, since you were being a little agressive towards him. That tends to be confused for being apologetic.

Awww, look at those eyes.Whose heart wouldn’t melt for a cat as sweet as your Taco?

  • Jen:

I absolutely believe that animals are aware of naughty behavior (most of the time). I came home one afternoon to find a broken section of fence and asked the girls (my 4 Arabians) “What is this? Does anyone want to talk about this??” They looked at the fence first, then back at me with that uh-oh expression and then all four of them looked off into space. It was pretty funny, although I was careful not to laugh. I’m pretty sure if they knew how, they would have been whistling :o)

  • Mariuca:

Definitely! In fact, I was just telling my hubby that one of our kids Benji apologized to me yest for being a naughty kitty!!

  • Patrice:

Yes, I believe my cat knows when she has been naughty, and she knows when she\’s made me upset. It\’s like a grudge match between us though and one of us usually caves in. It\’s really quite funny our relationship

After I have done something Bad, I start headbonking like crazy!

  • Sparkle:

I hate to confess but when I do something bad, I know it - but I don\’t care. My tortie roomie, Binga, is even worse. She seems to think that if she has done something bad, that gives her free reign to do more bad things.

Oh, Taco is so cool. I rarely do anything wrong but little brother Wart sure does. He knows he is bad and has allowed himself to get trained to sit politely at the food bowl and keep his mouth shut before he gets fed. I am sure it is his guilty conscience working behind the scenes.

  • Margaret:

Awwwww, sweet Taco. I totally believe cats can look apologetic. :)

  • BFDude:

I’ve never had a cat apologize, yet. I have one or two ignore me. I swear one gave me a dirty look. Like I was in her spot on the couch.

  • SaraKatt:

We cats are not known to be forgiving, but I think it happens more often that than not. I try to be cuddly and rub against my Mommie’s legs when I have a bad conscience. But it proable looks like a halfway apology.
