What Causes Diabetes In Cats?
Cats do not have an enzyme called “glucokinase” in their livers. Glucokinase is a key enzyme that controls the metabolism of carbohydrates and prevents glucose from flooding the animal.
This means that when a cat eats carbohydrates, which are sugars, they are overloaded with glucose, causing damage to their pancreas and other organs.
Despite this, most major pet food manufacturers use corn or other grains in their meals. Cats are NOT grain-eaters, and the grain causes a great deal of damage, but it IS a CHEAP FILLER.
Here are the first few ingredients of
Iam’s “HEALTHY NATURALS”: Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Meal, Chicken Meal, Salmon, Brewer Rice, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Corn Grits, Dried Beet Pulp, Dried Egg Product, Natural Chicken Flavor, Sodium Bisulfate, Potassium Chloride… if all the grains won’t ruin the health of your cat, the CHICKEN BY-PRODUCT MEAL will. This is a whole other story, and quite disgusting…
Most commercial dry foods contain between 30% and 70% carbohydrates. If we examine the diets of wild felines, the carbohydrate intake would be less than 5%, if any at all.
Cats need their natural diet of fresh, RAW meat.

Since we switched a few weeks ago, we are totally loving our new raw diet!

I still think it’s over-hyped. Cats eat glycogen in muscle (a carbohydrate) and use the same enzymes to digest that as they do starch. It’s not necessarily ‘bad’ for them and despite reading everything I can find on the subject most of the pro “natural feeding” doesn’t stack up to the science. I tend to think people believe it because it makes them feel good.

Well, I’ll go with logic over science! Cats in the wild do not get diabetes and the other diseases that domestic cats get. They eat their natural diet of raw meat which is 5% or less carb. I question where the “science” originates from, cat food manufacturer maybe? So much of “scientific reasearch” is backed by food, chemical, agra, and big pharma $$ that you just have to wonder, especially when they say that 50 to 70% carbs is OK for a cat whose natural diet is not grain-based.

My cat used to be huge. Now he is dwindling down in size, but he older and less active. So I hope nothing is wrong.

My cats are such picky eaters that they will only eat “Nutro” the oceanfish flavor. I noticed that my cats were putting on some weight so i tried switching their food but they wouldn’t touch it. So i decided to get the indoor “Nutro” the oceanfish flavor instead. It’s seem to be helping their motabolism!!

My cats were a little over weight so i swiched their food. Thank goodness i did because the other kind of food; i feed them was on recall and still is. I bought them the same kind of flavor but it was for indoor cats instead.
